This map is a combination of two maps: a topographic map that shows the shape of the Earth's surface and a geologic map that shows the age of rocks exposed at the Earth’s surface.

This type of map is called a shaded relief map. It looks somewhat like someone took a photograph of the country from space but the map was actually made using computers. It shows the shape of the land surface.
